Forklift Batteries: Operating a Safe Battery Changing Room

Not only will a safe battery changing room prevent catastrophes, it can also increase productivity and save money.

The most important factor is to make your battery changing room safe. Keep forklift safety equipment, such as goggles and gloves, in easy to reach places for operators to use. Be sure to follow all safety regulations such as eye washing stations and comply with specific ventilation requirements.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when setting up your battery changing room:

  1. Make sure to choose the right location. It’s a good idea to put the battery changing room near work areas so drivers aren’t wasting time traveling to a far corner of the warehouse.
  2. The room must have adequate electrical service, plumbing, drainage and heating and cooling. The wrong temperature can shorten a battery life.
  3. Remember to leave enough space for people to maneuver around the room with vehicles inside. This includes vertically as well as horizontally. There must be enough space outside the room too for forklift drivers to maneuver their vehicle inside.
  4. Consider using battery changing schedules to avoid traffic overflow and keep an efficient changing time.
  5. Use technology to your advantage. There are many battery management systems on the market that can help you manager your batteries in the most cost-effective way.
