Preventing Forklift Injuries

NEON Forklift focuses on the importance of forklift safety and proper operations training. There are too many careless forklift accidents and inadequate forklift operation training that has led to several forklift operator fatalities.

NEON Forklift provides training and safety forklift operation videos.

According to the National Traumatic Occupational Fatalities (NTOF) Surveillance System, more than 1,000 workers have died from traumatic injuries suffered in forklift related incidents since 1994. The majority of the fatalities resulted in forklift overturns.

To help prevent forklift injuries, companies should do the following:

  • Enforce that no workers can operate a forklift unless they have been trained and licensed.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive written safety program that includes all facility operating personnel.
  • Operating training should include factors that affect stability of forklift- weight and symmetry of load, speed of forklift, operating surface, tire pressure and driver behavior.
    • Inform operators of sit-down type forklifts that they can be crushed by the overhead guard or other part of the truck after jumping from overturning forklift.
    • Inform operators of stand-up forklifts with rear-entry access to exit from the truck.
    • Enforce seat belt usage.
  • Establish vehicle inspection and maintenance program.
  • Safety practices with lifting and elevating carriages.
  • Separate forklift traffic and workers on foot.
  • Limit aisles to workers on foot only and forklifts only.
